A third of all the food produced in the UK or imported into the country is wasted, according to scientists. Around seven million tonnes of that waste is created by households and most of it could have been eaten. An average family in the UK throws away around £700 of food every year.
Most food waste ends up in landfill sites where it rots away, releasing methane. As well as the food being wasted, you also have to factor in the waste of energy used to produce it and the water and packaging used in production, storage and transportation. If we all stopped wasting food it would equate to taking 1 in 4 cars off the roads in the UK.
Consider Home Composting
Home composting is a great way of stopping the food waste ending up in landfill and it’s good for the garden. Your local council might offer subsidised compost bins so it’s worth having a look at your council’s website to see what is available. Many councils now offer a food waste recycling collection service. The food waste is recycled into fertiliser and good quality soil improver. Sometimes it can be used to generate electricity as well.
The environmental impact of such a huge amount of food waste is immense. We all need to reduce the amount of food waste we send to landfill. It is also essential that we try and use the food we buy. Put together a meal plan and only buy what you need for the week.
