When you are planning your kitchen, there are a few things to keep in mind. A kitchen needs to be functional and should be designed with it’s use in mind rather than what it looks like. The kitchen is a high-traffic area of the house. You need to make sure it will be easy to move around the kitchen when it is in operation.
Bear in mind the main tasks carried out in a kitchen – preparing, service and clearing up after meals. The cooker, sink and fridge should be in close proximity and it should be easy to move between the three without walking too far, or making any difficult movements. A kitchen should flow as it will make your life easier.
The kitchen sink should be placed first. It is often put in a position with a view, such as under the kitchen window. The hob and oven should be considered next and these need to be put on an outside wall if possible.
Think about flooring and choose a hardwearing surface which will work with your chosen cabinets. What about worktops? Do you have the time and inclination to look after solid wood worktops? You will need to oil them regularly and sand them down from time to time to remove stains.
Take careful measurements and sketch out your design as clearly as you can. You can then work with a kitchen designer or kitchen installer to come up with a plan.
As well as kitchen cabinets, you need to consider other storage such as shelving, boxes and more. It is easier to come to a decision on storage when you are planning your kitchen. You can create a mood board using Pinterest and collect lots of ideas for your kitchen. See what looks good for other people and take all the good bits for your own kitchen design.
